Finding Your Why: The Secret to Lasting Change
Have you ever started a new health plan feeling motivated, only to find that a few weeks later life gets busy and your good intentions begin to slip?
You're certainly not alone.
Many of us focus on what we want to achieve. We want to lose weight, have more energy, sleep better or feel comfortable in our clothes again. But often, we don't stop to ask ourselves a much more important question.
Why does this matter to me?
Your "why" is the reason behind your goal. It's the deeper motivation that keeps you going when life throws challenges your way.
Perhaps you want to have the energy to keep up with your children or grandchildren. Maybe you want to feel confident on holiday, reduce your risk of future health problems or simply wake up feeling like yourself again.
Whatever it is, your why is personal to you.
What's Getting in the Way?
Sometimes we know what we want, but something seems to hold us back.
Fear can quietly creep in.
What if I fail?
What if I have to give up everything I enjoy?
What if I've left it too late?
What if nothing works for me?
These thoughts are incredibly common, but they're just that, thoughts. They aren't predictions of the future.
A useful exercise is to write down your worries and ask yourself whether they're facts or assumptions. Looking at them with curiosity rather than judgement can help take away some of their power.
Focus on What You Gain
It's easy to think about what we might have to give up when making changes to our health.
Instead, try asking yourself:
What would improve if I reached my goal?
Perhaps you would:
Feel more confident.
Have more energy throughout the day.
Enjoy social occasions without worrying about your weight.
Sleep better.
Feel stronger and more capable.
Be a positive role model for your family.
These are the things that can keep you moving forward when motivation naturally comes and goes.
Your Why Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
Many people think they need one huge life changing reason to make a difference.
The truth is, your why can be beautifully simple.
"I want to feel comfortable in my clothes."
"I want to enjoy walking without getting out of breath."
"I want to have energy left at the end of the day."
"I want to feel like me again."
Those reasons are enough.
Small Steps Create Big Changes
At Rachel Filewood Wellness Coach, I believe lasting health isn't about quick fixes or strict rules. It's about understanding what matters most to you and building habits that fit your life.
When your actions are connected to a meaningful purpose, healthy choices begin to feel less like a chore and more like an act of self-care.
If you're feeling stuck, perhaps the first step isn't finding a new diet or exercise plan.
Perhaps it's taking a quiet moment, making yourself a cup of tea, and asking:
Why do I want this?
Your answer might just become the foundation for the healthy, balanced life you're looking for.
